What to expect from Imago Couples Counseling
Imago has two main elements.
1. Teaching you about the emotional forces at work in your relationship
2. Providing you with effective communication tools
Research shows that most marriages, even the most successful ones, have long running arguments. Over time these arguments can erode the love that brought you together, and leave you feeling quite distant from someone who you may still love very deeply.
One of the first steps in Imago therapy is to quickly restore the connection by helping you and your partner talk together about things which matter, in a safe and connecting way. There is no shame, blame or criticism. Simply exploring what each partner feels, and discovering the origins of those feelings.
To help you talk about these issues we teach you a process called the Imago Dialogue. This has three steps, mirroring, validating and empathizing, and by following these steps the process of talking about potentially painful issues can become satisfying and rewarding.
Why you can trust Imago
Imago has been providing couples around the world with marriage counseling for over 30 years. Harville Hendrix PhD founded Imago with his partner Helen LaKelly Hunt to help couples counselors effectively address relationship problems.
In 1988 Hendrix published the best-seller "Getting the Love You Want" which has since been in the top 10 list eleven times. He has made 17 appearances on the Oprah Show.
Imago weaves together some of the most established psychological theories and practices, to create a coherent and effective approach to marriage counsling. One of the principles of Imago is to empower couples to understand their own emotional journey, and to teach them the tools they need to create a better relationship for themselves. That's why Imago was first published as a popular book for the general public, with a strong emphasis on it "making sense."
