December 7, 2011 The Amends Process, Marcie S. Cramer
The amends process is about forgiveness and letting go of past wounding and past re-wounding. The amends process, on the surface, looks to be entirely in the interest of the receiver’s healing. However, as with most Imago processes, there is much that is going for both partners, on the conscious level and the unconscious level. For the receiver sometimes this is just the first step in healing the disconnect, in more advanced couples there is a profound healing that can occur. And the sender, for their part, has taken another step into consciousness and healing their guilt. Their guilt also deserves to be healed and if it is not it will inevitable breed resentment. The sender makes the amends unasked and as they (the sender) consciously making an amends their own healing on several levels takes place. An integral part of this process is that it can be an unsolicited healing.

May 26, 2010 Creativity in Couplehood - Sophie Slade
Picture us, if you will, sitting up in bed at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, wearing matching pyjama tops, cups of tea in hand, as the participants arrive for a workshop on Creativity in Couplehood. My husband, David, and I got the opportunity a couple of weeks ago to present at the Psychotherapy Networker Conference on this topic and this is how we started because our bed is where we tend to spend the most time creating our relationship. I now have the opportunity to write an article for the Psychotherapy Networker magazine. Rich Simon says he doesn’t see many couples, even highly creative people, being creative about their relationship and to paraphrase him a bit harshly perhaps, he seems to think that much therapy helps couples trade one rut (a very uncomfortable one perhaps) for another (a more functional and pleasant one) but that it doesn’t help couples to really become creative about their relationship. I think Imago does offer this possibility although perhaps some of us don’t milk it to the fullest, preferring our own familiar therapy rut of addressing problems. In this week’s Think Tank I am hoping to share with you some of the thoughts and ideas that we put together for the Networker presentation and also I need to pick your brains about this topic. What are you doing, if anything, in your own relationship or with your clients to be creative? What does it mean even to you to be creative about your relationship. Please come and join the co-creative process so I have something to write in the article!

In this workshop, we’ll discuss the value and impact of our mindfulness practice when our own lives our in crisis. You’ll learn a decision-making approach to use client-by-client in deciding what to reveal and when, based on your therapeutic goals and outcomes. The presenter, a veteran therapist who recently had a very serious illness will also discuss how to differentiate between your client’s needs and your own around the issue of disclosure.

January 12, 2010 Couples Talk Money with Sally Palaian
The most effective money management tool for families is dialogue about money and yet many people struggle to speak straightforward truths about money. The financial losses and stress from the current economic downturn has further complicated these conversations. This talk aims to educate you about the underlying childhood factors that influence adult financial behaviors, the different types of money styles, and subsequently how these complementary styles become so problematic in a couple's power struggle. This talk focuses on educating your couples about when financial differences/difficulties are a normal part of the power struggle, and when the problem has grown beyond 'power struggle' terrain and into financial dysfunction.

Sally Palaian, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist who specializes in the treatment of trauma, addictions (money, sex, food, alcohol, relationship) and Imago Relationship Therapy.
December 8, 2009 Trapped in a Time Bubble: Creating Secure Attachment with Body-Based Work (including Somatic Experiencing)- Cheryl Dolinger Brown
A person who has been hurt in early bonding often has a traumatized part that remains frozen deep inside the adult self. Couples sessions create the perfect conditions for the attachment wounds to reemerge as partners feel threatened and respond with long-standing fight, flight or freeze adaptations and a defined attachment style. Somatic Experiencing, a body-centered approach, emphasizes awareness of sensations in the body to help regulate intensely high and low arousal states as they occur internally and between the couple.

Changes in American family structure and cultural norms since women's liberation would hint that at many changes that should be happening in roles. July 22, 2009 Tammy Nelson: What is Open Marriage and Polyamory?
Tammy Nelson talks about "What is Open Marriage and Polyamory?" Therapists are reporting they are seeing an increase in non-monogamous but committed relationships in their offices. Who are these couples and what does this mean culturally? Is marriage changing to accommodate a new definition of fidelity or is this just a blip on the screen of sexual mores like swinging was in the 70's? This think tank is an introduction that will define some of the terms and give a brief overview of the history of open marriage. Some case material will be discussed. Can couples therapy like Imago Relationship therapy help these groups of people or are open marriages only exits from intimacy? Follow up questions and comments by email are encouraged to continue the discussion on the ImagoShare listserve.

Perfection is the story of Julie Metz's journey through chaos and transformation as she creates a different life for herself and her young daughter. May 13, 2009 One Wants To Stay And The Other May Leave- William Doherty
A very common but underemphasized therapeutic challenge occurs when a couple comes to therapy divided about whether to put effort into salvaging the relationship. If you try to start couples therapy, you risk allying with the motivated spouse and pursuing the disengaged one. If you are neutral about whether to work on the relationship, you risk alienating the partner who wants to save the marriage and appropriately challenging the reluctant partner. This session will present a practical protocol for help both partners work on their agendas while at the same time holding out hope for the benefits of proceeding with couples therapy.

William J. Doherty is past director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program at the University of Minnesota, and founder of the new Citizen Professional Center. He has presented internationally and written extensively about couples therapy, including a book for couples titled Take Back Your Marriage.

March 11, 2009 Marketing Imago To Prospective Clients: Melva & Jesse Johnson
Marketing and explaining to prospective clients Imago theory and processes can be challenging. This is especially true for clients who have little, if any, counseling and/or psychotherapy experience. Therapists can also be intimidating because of the misperceptions uninformed people have about who we are and what we do. This is one of the reasons why Melva and Jesse wrote their book, ?Mining for Gold In Your Relationships.? The book, which combines theory and practice, uses actual case histories told in story form to enable readers to understand what we do, why we do it, and the powerful transformative tools we use as Imago therapists. It takes readers into the therapy office and demonstrates how we work with real life couples to help them transform their lives and relationships. Melva and Jesse will share ideas on how therapists can use their book to build their practices and will lead a ?round table? discussion allowing everyone on the call to share their best and most practical marketing ideas. Their Think Tank will follow a nationwide re-launch of their book in digital and audio form what will take place on February 24th.

February 18, 2009 Look Who's Talking Now: I Forgive You for Criticizing Me with Nedra Fetterman
I see couples therapy as the place for individuals and couples to learn about safety so that it is safe enough to soften or grow beyond defenses and survival strategies, embrace and heal the wounds so that two people are living from and relating to each other from their authentic core selves. Harville refers to this as the energetized core. Nedra is a licensed psychologist and Director of The Relationship Center in Ardmore, PA. She brings over 25 years of experience in working with individuals, couples and organizations and is currently supervising psychiatric residents at The University of Pennsylvania. Married to her husband Joe for 28 years and mother of 21 year old Ben, she is grateful to Imago for being - in the poet John O'Donohue's words - her "gateway to Spring."

January 14, 2009 From Chaos to Connection: Using Somatic Experiencing(SE) with Reactive Couples
When couple are so triggered and reactive that all our Imago tools fail to help them calm down enough to dialogue or connect with eachother, there is still more we can do. Somatic Experiencing uses an understanding of our biologically-based defense mechanisms and awareness of bodily sensations to help release trauma which has been stored in the nervous system. In addition to teaching the basics of SE, which are easily translated to clients, there will be case examples of using it with couples.
Cheryl Dolinger Brown, an LCSW in New York has happily been a part of the Imago community for a dozen years and is an Advanced Clinician and Certified Imago Consultant (CDB is CSW doing SE in NYC). She leads an Imago consultation group and is available for phone consultations (for Imago CEUs).

For those new to TeleForums

  1. Pick up your telephone and dial the telephone number at the appropriate time.
  2. After one ring, you will be automatically connected to the conference call. No operators, no waiting; it's fully automatic and immediate.
  3. After one hour, the call will end and everyone will hang up.

There are no special telephone company conference call charges. Your call to the 646 number will just be a regular long distance call ($4-$9 for the hour), as if you were calling a friend in Florida.

Using an automated teleconferencing bridge may be a new experience for some people. We've found the following instructions and tips work well.

How to Call Into the Bridge

  1. Put your dogs and kids in another room.
  2. Pick up your phone.
  3. If you have call-waiting, please disable it first by dialing 1170 and waiting for the dial tone (or by dialing *70 and waiting for dial tone).
  4. Please don't call the bridge number you've been given at any other time than during your scheduled time. There is no one "there" at the bridge number.
  5. The system is totally automatic -- there is no Operator.
  6. If you have a question for the host, please say your name first before you ask your question. Please let the host manage the call. You'll see how easily it works!

Tips for Callers

  1. Do not use Speaker Phones. If you use a Portable Phone, be aware they can introduce static as you walk around!
  2. If you have a two-line phone or other phones in your room/office, TURN OFF all ringers before calling in.
  3. Don't breathe into the mouthpiece. It's comical, but disruptive.
  4. On your phone bill, you will see just regular, long distance charges. There are NO other charges, hidden or otherwise. Ed paid a rental fee to cover the use of the bridge. We don't make money on your long distance.
  5. Most long distance carriers charge between $4 and $9 per hour for long distance calls so check with them.
  6. The reason I mention #4 and #5 above is that most teleconferencing companies charge a per minute access rate per caller. We don't do this. Ed paid a rental fee per hour for full use of the bridge. This keeps it very simple (and inexpensive) for everyone.
  7. Ideally, get a headset for your phone with a mute button.

REMEMBER:

  1. Take the call in a quiet place.
  2. Do not put the call on hold.
  3. No car phones.
  4. No dogs, cats ok.
  5. No babies.
  6. No paper shuffling.
  7. No washing dishes.
  8. No interruptions.
  9. No typing.
  10. Please treat this call as an appointment.
